More than 370,000 Tesla vehicles recalled over power steering malfunctions

Tesla Has Recalled More Than 370,000 Vehicles For A Power Steering Issue.

The manufacturer of electric vehicles said the recall covers 376,241 of its 2023 Model 3 sedans and Model Y SUVs (with operating software prior to 2023.38.4) because the vehicles may experience a loss of electronic power-assisted steering, Telsa says in a report filed with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

The loss of power steering assist, which could occur when the vehicle reaches a stop and then accelerates again, can require greater steering effort, especially at low speeds and increase the risk of a accident, the company said.

To resolve the issue, Tesla began sending an over-the-air software solution in October 2023 to prevent the vehicle’s printed circuit board for the electronic power steering assist from being over stressed and causing the issue, the company said.

According to the NHTSA, Tesla’s number for this recall is SB-25-00-004. Owner notification letters are expect to be mailed March 25, 2025. Owners may contact Tesla customer service at 1-877-798-3752.

Tesla recall remedy; NHTSA investigation

Tesla said in the NHTSA report that as of January 23, 2025, 99% of influenced vehicles in the U.S. have installed a software update to stop the vehicle’s printed circuit board for the electronic power steering assist from being over stressed and causing the issue, the company said.

Tesla had begun sending the over-the-air software solution in October 2023 and all U.S. Vehicles in production since have received the remedy also, the company said.

Tesla said it had received 3,012 warranty claims and 570 field reports for U.S. vehicles potentially related to the condition, but is not aware of any crashes, injuries, or deaths related to the issue.

NHTSA, which began investigating reports of loss of steering control in 2023 Model 3 and Y vehicles in July 2023, associated one crash in its investigation and more than 50 instances of vehicles reportedly being towed because of the issue.

That investigation into the electronic power steering rack and pinon assembly, electrical hardware and related electronic controls used in Model 3 and Y vehicles remains open, according to NHTSA.
