Apple has been rumored to be working on a foldable iPhone for nearly a decade now. We have been hearing about the foldable iPhone “coming soon”, but then those are always followed by reports of delays or something else. However, in the last one year, the frequency of these speculative reports has gone up.
There have been leaks that it would be called the iPhone 18 Folding. It will launch in 2026, that it would have a display which would unfold to be larger than the iPhone 16 Pro Max, and that the company is working on two foldable devices, the second one being a folding iPad. These rumors have now begun to align, which is an indication that these rumors may actually be rooted in some reality. The latest one claims to reveal the display details of the alleged foldable iPhone.
According to a leak shared by Weibo-based leakster, Digital Chat Station, the foldable iPhone will sport a 5.49-inch display when folded, and a 7.74-inch display when unfolded. However, comparing it to the Oppo Find N5, which launched on Thursday, the leakster says the iPhone Fold’s display would be shorter and broader. This is in line with a previous leak by The Wall Street Journal, which claimed that the foldable iPhone would “unfold to a display size that would be larger than an iPhone 16 Pro Max”. Considering the iPhone 16 Pro Max has a 6.9-inch display, it suggests that the folding iPhone’s display would be at least 7-inches.
A few years ago, Apple was reportedly experimenting with foldable iPhone displays that would fold outwards. However, the company obviously then shifted focus to an inward-folding design, similar to most foldable phones that we see in the market right now.
Additionally, the leakster also claims that the foldable iPhone internal and external display will both have an “unprecedented aspect ratio”.
As for the launch timeline, in line with what earlier rumors have indicated, the leakster expects the foldable iPhone to launch next year or the year after that. The folding iPad that we wrote about at the beginning of this article was also mentioned by this leakster, who says it will also arrive within the same time frame.
This launch timeline leak is in line with that shared by Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, The News, and The Wall Street Journal in the past. All these leaks have predicted a release in late 2026 or early 2027.
